Departure Nocturnes
April 7th, 2023

The third instrumental record by John Calvin Abney, exploring geography, weather, memory, and loss.

A collection of prepared piano and electric piano works focused on the dust, the lost, and the items that are forgettably strewn about our lives and homes. The junk drawer minutiae, the loose nails, batteries, sandpaper, cables, and coins, bolster the strings and wooden angles of the instruments, forming a spacious awareness of what has disappeared into the corners of where we exist. A series of synth modules and digital delays craft an unmistakable likeness of a household in motion, a workplace in transit.

Felt Nocturne, Half Dollar in F Major, Dust Prelude, and Lost Storage were recorded at Cardinal Song Studio in Yukon, Oklahoma, under the watchful ear of engineer Michael Trepagnier.

Glass Nocturne, Lost Storage II, She May Just Be Far, and Close The Door Behind You were recorded in the spring rain storms of Abney's home studio in south Austin, Texas.

The captivating and encompassing album art is “Luck Worn” by Ruth B. Loveland, a visual artist from Norman, Oklahoma. This piece was part of her soil studies in the Mississippi Delta as the autumn fell in the year 2022.
