about
The Contractor, a song from John's 2020 album Familiar Ground, was originally written in the hills of Hollywood, California at the tail end of his 2018 autumn US tour. He made his way to Austin, TX and began the sessions that comprised Safe Passage with Britton Beisenherz at Ramble Creek Studios as the year closed. This initial version of the Contractor was done in a single take straight to magnetic tape and represents a tired and listless moment of self-reflection amidst constant touring and recording, accurately matching the sentiment of the lyrics and the tone of the song.
Recorded and engineered by Britton Beisenherz at Ramble Creek Studios in December 2018.
Written and performed by John Calvin Abney
Originally released on the album Familiar Ground via
Black Mesa Records in November 2020.

Love these songs acoustically and have seen Los Dos Juans a few times live. I really appreciate the electric spin on this live set because it drowns out the screaming idiots who haven’t learned how to respect the artist singing or what concert etiquette is. Well done fellas! James Kilpatrick
